Rich Turpin's 2012 Redskins' Season Predictions
Week 1 @ Saints- The Robert Griffin III era gets off to a great start in 2012, the Saints miss Sean Payton and Jonathan Vilma. RG3 goes for 258 yards, 2 TD’s in the Redskins road victory, 27-23 (1-0)
Week2 @ St. Louis- Jeff Fisher and the Rams should be improved in 2012, but the Redskins beat Sam Bradford and company behind 100 yards rushing from Tim Hightower, 31-20. (2-0)
Week 3 Cincinnati- Fed Ex Field is a madhouse as RGIII makes his home debut, he doesn’t disappoint as he throws for 300 yards in the handling of Andy Dalton and the Bengals. Skins win, 23-10. (3-0)
Week 4 @TB- The Bucs won the off-season by adding WR Vincent Jackson, G Carl Nicks, CB Eric Wright and drafting S Mark Barron. Coach Greg Schiano is still trying to acclimate himself to the pro game, Redskins beat Tampa Bay behind their 5th ranked defense; a defensive TD from CB Josh Wilson is the difference in the 24-20 win. (4-0)
Week 5 Falcons- Matt Ryan has the Falcons in position to not only win the NFC South but possibly represent the NFC in the Super Bowl; the Redskins aren’t on that level just yet and can’t overcome RGIII’s early mistakes. The Falcons win this one, 20-13. (4-1)
Week 6 Vikings- After losing to the Falcons the Redskins welcome the Minnesota Vikings to Fed Ex Field. Adrian Peterson is still suffering from a knee injury and Christian Ponder is still…..Christian Ponder. The Redskins bounce back nicely behind 300 yards passing from RGIII. Skins win 34-20. (5-1)
Week 7 @NYG- The Skins beat the Giants 2 times in 2011, that won’t happen in 2012. RG3 struggles early and nearly completes the comeback but an INT by Antrel Rolle clinches the win. Giants 24, Redskins 16. (5-2)
Week 8 @PIT Schedule makers didn’t do the Redskins any favors with this stretch, a week after losing at the Giants the Redskins have to travel to Heinz Field. The Redskins can’t get anything going against a stingy Steelers defense; Redskins drop 2 straight. Pittsburgh wins at home 20-10. (5-3)
Week 9 Carolina- This game includes the last 2 Heisman Trophy winners, Cam Newton and RG3. This game ends up being a shootout between the 2 young QB’s with both throwing for over 300 yards. The Redskins need a game ending INT from S Tanard Jackson to secure a victory, 31-27. (6-3)
Week 11 Eagles- The Eagles continue to disappoint a year after the ‘dream team’ went 8-8 they continue to struggle. The Redskins use 200 yards rushing from Hightower and Roy Helu to get past the division rivals, 27-17. (7-3)
Week 12 @Dallas- Thanksgiving, the Redskins haven’t played Dallas on Thanksgiving since 2002 and have never beaten them. This year is no different, Redskins rookie QB RGIII outplays top 20 QB Tony Romo, but in the end Dallas' D holds and a missed Neil Rackers FG seals it for Dallas. Dallas 19, Redskins 17. (7-4)
Week 13 Giants- Last time these two met in New Jersey it wasn’t pretty for the offensive line. This time the Redskins get a little revenge. LB Ryan Kerrigan gets to Eli Manning 3 times and the Redskins don’t look back after jumping to a 7-0 lead. The final score here is Redskins 30, Giants 20. (8-4)
Week 14 Ravens- Even with LB Terrell Suggs gone for the season, the Ravens still command respect as one of the best teams in the AFC. Ray Rice is a top 5 RB and the Ravens still have a formidable defense. The Redskins nearly win this one, but can’t quite finish. Ravens win 20-17. (8-5)
Week 15 @Cleveland- Even with rookie RB Trent Richardson, the Browns are still struggling to win ball games. QB Brandon Weeden has played well to this point but the Redskins defense is just too much for him to overcome. DC Jim Haslett throws too many coverages and blitzes at the ‘old’ rookie and forces too many mistakes. The Redskins win easily, 34-10. (9-5)
Week 16 @Philly For some strange reason the Redskins can’t put two solid games together against the Eagles, the Michael Vick led Eagles win this one in front of their home crowd and it’s Vick who has the better day between the 2 QB’s. Vick is unstoppable in the 27-17 victory. (9-6)
Week 17 Dallas- It’s simple, the Giants have wrapped up the division and the Lions have already lost so the winner of this game makes the post-season. The Redskins pull out all the stops against the Cowboys, using the option to perfection for the first time all season. Dallas D Coordinator Rob Ryan has no answer for the option and the Redskins win this one and make the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Redskins 24, Cowboys 13. (10-6)
***Noteworthy*** Turpin has the Redskins starting off 4-0, and in none of the Redskins' 6 losses that he predicts, do they lose by more than 10 points. For a more grounded prediction of the Redskins' season, I've embedded Sportsyack's picks that were made back in April. You can read those here:
